Basil

Ocimum basilicum

Basil is a popular indoor plant valued for its sweet basil. It naturally occurs in Tropical Asia and can adapt well to home conditions when its light, watering, and humidity needs are respected.

Basic Care

  • Light: Bright Direct.
  • Water: Moderate. Check the potting mix before watering rather than following a fixed calendar.
  • Humidity: Medium.
  • Temperature: 60–80°F (16–27°C).
  • Soil: Use a well-draining indoor potting mix and a container with drainage holes.
  • Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced, diluted houseplant fertilizer during active growth, following the product label.

Growth and Safety

Growth is typically fast. May bloom indoors when mature and given suitable light. Generally regarded as non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Propagation

Usually propagated from stem cuttings, division, offsets, or another method appropriate to the species.

Plantify tip: Adjust watering to the plant’s light level, pot size, season, and drying speed. Good drainage is one of the simplest ways to prevent common indoor-plant problems.
